New Gorham Elementary School Project
Update

January 11, 2010

Thought an update on the new school project would be of interest to you.  First a bit of background information, and then an update on the work so far.

When bids were awarded, the economic times were helpful to us, as bids came in lower than was expected.  The approximate $30 million project is being paid for 90% by the state, and 10% local funds.  A lower cost to build means that we were able to include some of the additional bid items that we desired!  Additionally, the state is very interested in the potential ìsavingsî and has reduced the amount they will provide to this project, but it still represents 90% of the new cost to build.

Ground work began last fall, and the initial roadway into the site is visible from 237.  They have begun to pour foundations for the building.  Work will slow over the winter, except for the holes that will be drilled for the geothermal heating/cooling system.  Drilling in winter is preferred to drilling in mushy spring soil!  Go figure!!

In any construction project, like building a house or school, there will cost over runs.  In a school project, those require "change orders."  Some changes occur during the ground preparation phase, and others during actual construction.  The building committee approved a couple of these change orders.  Our next meeting is set for February 3rd.  We anticipate selecting exterior colors at that meeting.

This is such an exciting project.  After so many months of discussion, deliberation and planning, we are underway!  I will do my best to keep you posted as progress is made.
