New Gorham Elementary School Project
Update
April 2010
Construction on the new elementary school has progressed ahead of schedule, due in part to the mild winter. It's worth a drive by the site on Rt. 237 just past the Little Falls roundabout towards White Rock. Since the last report, the following has taken place:
- Drilling geothermal holes is approximately 50% complete. These holes are nearly 400 feet deep.
- Water and hydrants are now available on site.
- Vertical steel I-beams are being placed.
- Erosion control measures have proven effective.
- Site development work is ahead of schedule, anticipating that a base layer of paving will be completed later this month.
- Overall, progress is one month ahead of schedule.
In other developments, the New School Committee continues to meet. In recent meetings, the following has taken place:
- The Percent for Art Project committee, chaired by Roger Marchand has begun their work. Members include Amy Cousins (GMS), Sharon Portelance, artists Cathryn Falwell and Henry Wolyneic and Suzanne Morin from the PDT Architects. The committee will be screening initial proposals in May.
- The Building Committee has selected exterior colors, including exterior red brick and a crisp white color scheme reflecting a classic New England character.
- Two sub committees will be formed with representation as identified by Superintendent Sharp. Those committees are (1) Naming of the new school and (2) Playground equipment.
While construction work is underway for the new school, the K-5 Transition Team continues to plan for the reconfiguration of the new school, Village and Narragansett into K-5 schools for the fall of 2011. Updates for both the new school and K-5 can be found on the district website: www.gorhamschools.org with links to desired information.
