The elementary schools in Gorham are using the Everyday Mathematics program. This program is a problem solving approach based on everyday situations. Throughout instruction, concepts are revisited regularly. Your child has the opportunity to practice important basic number skills, often through the use of games. The lessons in Everyday Math are based on activities and discussions to ensure that your child understands mathematical content beyond basic arithmetic.
There may be times when concepts are difficult to grasp and understanding takes time. To address this need, classroom teachers provide differentiated instruction. The teacher may use readiness activities, game practice, alternate journal pages, math boxes and other varied approaches to help your child gain a better understanding of math concepts.
When differentiated classroom instruction is not enough, your child may visit the Math Lab. This learning environment offers additional Everyday Math support in a small group setting. Math trained educational technicians or learning lab teachers may provide the instruction in this setting. Short or long term interventions may be in place until your child demonstrates a solid understanding of the math concepts needed to reach grade level goals.
The Math Lab also uses a computer fact fluency program called FASTT Math. FASTT stands for Fluency and Automatcity through Systematic Teaching with Technology. The goal of the FASTT Math program is to help students develop fluency with basic facts. This program helps students to abandon the use of inefficient and time-consuming strategies for determining the answers to basic facts and helps them develop the capacity to retrieve basic facts from memory quickly and effortlessly.
There are many things that you can do at home to support your child. Reviewing and discussing Home and Study Links, practicing fact triangles, playing card and board games, and incorporating real life situations such as measuring, estimating, and counting will help your child. There are also online resources to explore with your child.
Please contact Cheryl Fotter, K-5 Math Lead Teacher, or your child's classroom teacher with specific questions regarding math instruction and support at the K-5 level.
